Cashmere hair and cashmere fiber. Cashmere is harvested from mountain goat, it consists fine cashmere fiber and coarse hair. Its’ coat is predominantly coarse hair, but has small concentration of fine down underneath. The climate on high plateau of Mongolia is ideal to ensure the fine growth of down, which protects the goat from temperature extremes. The outer coat hair (also called guard hair) protect goat from hash wind, rain, snow & dirt. The inner layer fiber ( also called "down") provides excellent R-value (insulation). We call fine cashmere as "cashmere fiber" not "cashmere hair" nor "hair".

Understand what you buy: originates in China, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Cashmere, and Turkey. Chinese Cashmere, Cashmere can only be combed from goats. Sixty percent of the world's supply of Cashmere is produced in China. Chinese cashmere quality can be evaluated as:

• 1) Fiber micron (14-15.5um).
• 2) Fiber Length (20mm-40mm).
• 3) Coarse hair content (0.1-0.5%).
• 4) Black hair content (apply to natural white cashmere only).
• 5) Fiber whiteness (apply to natural white cashmere only).
• 6) Oil content, cashmere should has less than 1% oil content.
• 7) Chinese cashmere has three main colors: natural white, natural light-gray and natural brown.
• 8) Hand feel & cleanness.
• 9) Fiber length less than 32mm are normally used for weaving yarns and over 32mm fiber are used for knitting yarns. The best and most expensive natural white cashmere produced from the west of Inner Mongolia, China.

Cashmere can only be combed from goats once a year in the spring. As a result, there is very little cashmere produced each year. The world cashmere production is 1/100 of the wool crop and 1/5000 of the cotton crop. It takes one cashmere goat 4 years to grow enough cashmere for one sweater! There are 7 miles of yarn in a typical cashmere sweater. The yield of Cashmere, from greasy fiber form to ready-to-spin clean fiber is relatively low. Approximately only 50-60% of the greasy fiber is usable for clothing.

They are not jumpers like many other breeds and standard woven wire sheep fencing will contain them nicely. All ready-to-spin or animal fibers must gone through so called 'dehairing ' process, in an afford to separate the coarse/guard hair and fine fiber. MC5 means, the yak fiber only contains less than 0.5% coarse/guard hair. The coarse/guard hair content not only affects the average fiber fineness but also has a profound impact on fiber hand feel. The less of the coarse/guard hair, the finer the fiber, the softer & better hand feels and easier spin.

Slivers, Understand what silk made of: Chinese silk has two types, Tussah & Mulberry. Silk is the only organic fiber that is in the form of a filament, and it is produced by the silkworm. In spinning its cocoon for its metamorphosis from the chrysalis state, the silkworm forms in its internal orifices called "spinnerets" located below its mouth. When emitted, the two threads combine into a single thread and harden immediately upon exposure to air. the filaments adhere to each other to form the cocoon shell. After the cocoons are harvested, they are 'reeled" by placing them in a basin of hot water to loosen the filaments, pulling the filament ends of several cocoons 4 to 20 ends together, and adhere to each other because of the natural gum on their surface. this reeling process results in a single yarn of silk. It appears to the unaided eye to be a single filament, but in actuality it is composed of several very fine filaments.
